Long Xuyen is a relatively small city in the Mekong Delta and is best known for the Long Xuyen floating market. It is also a good base for exploring An Giang, one of the most authentic and most beautiful provinces of the delta.

Long Xuyen floating market

The main reason for most travelers to visit Long Xuyen is the floating market. It is one of the least touristy floating markets in the Mekong Delta and therefore feels wonderfully local and authentic.

To see the Long Xuyen floating market at its peak, you need to get up early, because the market starts at 5 in the morning and after 9 it gets a lot quieter. The market is held on a two-kilometer stretch on the Hau River. It’s no surprise that a boat trip is the best way to visit the floating market.

The market is busiest in the early morning hours. Although not as big as the Cai Rang floating market, you can sometimes find hundreds of boats trading various local products such as fruits, vegetables, flowers and fish. It is a unique sight how boats moor against each other to negotiate about the products they sell on board.

If you are not traveling with a tour, you can negotiate a boat trip to the floating market at the pier in Long Xuyen city. You can often combine this with a follow-up trip through the small canals. Breakfast on the floating market is also possible.

5 things to do in Long Xuyen

The Long Xuyen Floating Market may be its most famous attraction, but there is plenty to do in and around the city. Fortunately, because after a visit to the market you still have a lot of time left.

1. Bang Lang Stork Sanctuary

Bang Lang Stork Sanctuary is in the same province as Can Tho city, but is actually closer to Long Xuyen. About 700,000 storks come here every year to breed and raise their young. Especially around sunrise and sunset it is an impressive sight to see thousands of storks leave their nest (morning) or come back (evening).

2. Ta Pa: Lake, temple & mountain

Around 50 km from Long Xuyen you will find Ta Pa mountain, this is one of the seven mountains in An Giang, even though it is more like a hill. In the otherwise completely flat Mekong Delta, these hills are very striking. At the bottom of the hill is the Ta Pa pagoda, that is built in the local Khmer style. From here it is about 400 meters to the top. The road to the top of the hill is quite bad and difficult, so it can only be reached by motorbike or on foot. There is also a lake next to the hill, which is not impressive in terms of size, but the jade green water and the beautiful location make it well worth a visit.

3. Tra Su

When you drive towards Chau Doc from here, you will pass Tra Su. This submerged forest has a unique biodiversity and a boat trip through the forest which is half underwater feels like you have ended up in a fairytale.

4. Palm field

5. Tram Chim National Park

In Tram Chim National Park you will find a similar forest to Tra Su. This park is best known as one of the best places for bird watching in Vietnam. Take a wonderful boat trip through the mangrove, water lily fields and wetlands. Along the way you can enjoy the peace and quiet and try to spot as many birds as possible, many of which are on the list of protected species.

How to get there?

Long Xuyen is easily accessible from Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho. There are direct buses from these cities.

From Ho Chi Minh City, the journey takes approximately 6 hours and the ticket price is between 90,000 VND to 150,000 VND depending on the type of vehicle.

From Can Tho you already have bus tickets from 30,000 VND. Many buses go that way and it takes just a short 30 minute ride.

Best time to visit

The rainy season takes from May to October, but the rain makes the landscape very green and beautiful. From November to April is dry season.

Together, they create an immersive and lively atmosphere where visitors can explore local culture, indulge in shopping, and savor the flavors of Vietnam.

Days: Open every day

How to get there: Getting to Ben Thanh Night Market and the Ben Thanh Street Food Market is quite easy as they are located in the city center of Ho Chi Minh City. Ben Thanh Market – Hcmc

Ho Chi Minh City is home to one of Vietnam’s most bustling locations – the Ben Thanh Market. The market possesses the perfect balance between being a novel tourist attraction and a respected local hotspot.

Here, consumers can choose from a tapestry of food, souvenirs, and artwork and develop a sense of true Vietnamese life.

History

Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City. Photo: Ludovic Lubeigt

Unlike so many other Ho Chi Minh City landmarks, the Ben Thanh Market was well established by the French colonialism era. The history of the market dates back as far as the 17th century when entrepreneurial-minded vendors began setting up market stalls on the banks of the Saigon River in the hopes of turning a profit.

By the turn of the 18th century, the market was in full swing and was bustling with vendors and haggling locals alike. The arrival of the French saw a change in the market on the Saigon River.

In 1859, they commandeered its control before a fire in 1870 signaled its end. In 1912, the market was rebuilt to become the country’s finest and moved to its current location.

It’s difficult to properly sum up the sheer range of products available at the Ben Thanh Market. Everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, idiosyncratic gifts, and electronic products are available here, being that the market caters to an increasingly diverse range of customers.

The stalls are awash with the sounds of conversation, haggling, and the pleasant interchange of banter between vendor and potential customer. An entire day can be spent meandering around the market’s long, flowing corridors, observing the cavalcade of hopeful sellers and apprehensive buyers hoping to negotiate a deal.

Covering an area of over 11,000 square meters, the Ben Thanh market is a perpetual hotbed for human activity. Quiet days are nonexistent and a surplus of eclectic products is the norm. There are a few particularly wonderful art stalls that sell an array of indigenous artifacts and nick-nacks such as silk clothes, chopsticks, artwork, and jewelry.

The Best Time to Visit

Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City. Photo: s tsui

While there’s never a bad time to visit the Ben Thanh Market, it’s important to note the differences between its daytime incarnation and its nighttime one.

After 6 pm, hungry locals seeking a post-work meal start infiltrating the market, making use of its food stalls. The sights, sounds, and smells emanating from these eateries are gloriously Vietnamese and you’ll be able to get a candid insight into the lives of the citizens.

Setting up for lunch. Photo: Adam Straney

There’s a delightfully humble quality in watching a chef cook your meal from only a few feet away. Despite all the food stalls sharing the same skinny stretch of road, the eateries are all incredibly hygienic and the range of fish, meat, and vegetables on offer is noticeably clean and fresh.

Menus are written in both the native tongue and English so there’s no need to feel intimidated or confused when ordering your meal. Once you’re sufficiently satiated, you can resume wandering around the market, marveling at the sight of a metropolis in full swing.

Overall, the Ben Thanh Market is a fascinating insight into authentic Vietnamese life. It serves as a wonderful intersection where tourists meet locals and it offers a laundry list of unique goods and services. It may not be the cheapest market in the world, but it may be one of the best!

Opening hours: 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM every day

An Dong Market is located in District 5, the heart of Chinatown in Ho Chi Minh City. To reach the market, you can take several buses such as routes 06, 139, 45, and 56. The market is approximately 3 to 4 km away from District 1, and depending on your location, a taxi ride will cost between 50,000 VND and 90,000 VND, taking around 15 minutes to reach your destination.

Short history

An Dong Market has a rich history dating back to the 1950s. It was established during a time when the Chinese community in Ho Chi Minh City thrived and flourished. The market was initially a small trading hub, mainly catering to the local Vietnamese-Chinese population.

Over the years, An Dong Market grew in size and popularity, becoming one of the most significant wholesale markets in the city. It gained a reputation for offering a wide variety of goods, particularly clothes and accessories, at competitive prices. The market’s strategic location in Chinatown further contributed to its success and appeal.

Architecture and layout of the market building

An Dong Market, originally constructed in 1951 and later reconstructed in 1991 by the Vietnamese Chinese community, features a vintage and nostalgic architectural style. The market’s design draws inspiration from buildings in Hong Kong from the 1980s and 1990s.

The market is characterized by its rectangular prism shape and its faded white color, which has taken on a grayish hue over time. The exterior is adorned with a concrete grid facade consisting of 306 cells. This unique design not only adds visual interest but also serves a practical purpose by providing protection from the elements while allowing for ventilation.

The building of An Dong Market spans multiple levels, including a basement, ground floor, and first and second floors. Each level is bustling with shops and stalls offering a diverse range of products, from clothing and accessories to electronics and household goods. The layout of the market is designed to maximize space and facilitate easy navigation for visitors.

Explore and compare: Take a stroll around the market to explore different stalls and compare prices before making a purchase.

Play it cool: Avoid showing excessive interest in an item as it may weaken your bargaining position. Maintain a casual demeanor during negotiations.

Walking away: If a vendor does not accept your offer, don’t hesitate to walk away. They may call you back with a better deal. If not, it indicates that your offered price was not reasonable.

Banking facilities: An Dong Market has ATMs available for customers to withdraw money. Additionally, most jewelry stores in the market offer currency exchange services.

Facilities: The market is equipped with staircases, escalators, and air-conditioning in certain areas.

Explore Chinatown: Take the opportunity to combine your visit to An Dong Market with other highlights in the Chinatown area.

Vieng Market Festival, Nam Dinh: Buying Luck In A Lively Atmosphere

Held in Nam Truc and Vu Ban District, Nam Dinh Province, Vieng Market festival is launched on the annual 8th day of the first lunar month, only once in a year, when people have just finished their Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.

When Does Vieng Market Festival Take Place?

The market opens on the 8th of January; nevertheless, the most spiritual moment falls on the night of the 7th and early 8th. That is the moment of heavenly-earthly, positive-negative exchange.

According to the popular belief, at the time, men and Gods could reach together and all the prayers could be perceived more clearly. Trade could at the time take place smoothly. Consequently, there are 40,000-50,000 people coming to the market on the night of 7th alone.

The market on the night of 7th is called “Cho am phu” (Hades Market). There are about 10,000-12,000 people coming to the market on the following 8th. The market-goers not only just enjoy the market atmosphere but also bring along the feeling toward Mother, praying for fortune and favourable nature, rich crops, happy family. They buy and sell just for aspiration at luck in the rest of the year.

What are Activities at Vieng Market Festival?

Vieng market is actually typical to an agricultural countryside that is rich in natural products, a kind of radiant open-air “fair” produced by the local farmers, especially ornamental plants, speciality crops, subtle craft articles, utensils, bronze and iron-made tools, etc.

This spring market displays handicraft products, antiquities and false antiquities, utensils, tools for agriculture production, and many kinds of ornamental plants. Specialities are barbecued beef and “bánh dày” (sticky rice cake).

The cheapest things at Vieng would be flowers and trees, which bring both the buyer and seller happiness and luck. Each year, a lot of Vietnamese people flock to this crowded market to purchase at least one item at midnight on the 7th day with an aim to get luck without caring about the prices.

From around 2a.m, deals are done under the light of candles or flash-lights. Deals are agreed quickly, as people believe, to keep the luck. From 6a.m, local people bring farming tools such as hoes and sickles to sell, which relate closely to their lives. Buyers believe that the tools will bring them health and richness. Vieng market is also a place to relax. Lovers would find themselves or their happy future here.

Above all, everyone visiting the market just wish to buy the burnt veal at any cost, which is considered the indispensable gift from the market and bliss from fair of the Vieng market-goers. Accordingly, although the Vu Ban residents travelled anywhere, they just thought of the folk-song as a reminder:

“Enjoying New Year’s day at home on the 1st

Engaging sports festival at communal house on the 2nd

Going to Qua Linh market on the 4th

Then Trinh market on 5th and Goi market on 6th

The following 7th is just for rest

Packing and travelling to Vieng market on 8th

Because it just takes place once a year.”

Vieng Market Festival is truly a cultural and spiritual activity of the inhabitants in Nam Dinh. If you have a chance to visit this beautiful province, do not miss a chance to join Vieng Market Festival as you may be amazed by how joyful and special it is.
